On April 27-28 MHCRC staff joined regional community media makers for the 2018 NW Media Summit: Access The Future, an event organized by the Alliance for Community Media NW (ACMNWR) and held at Open Signal in NE Portland. The annual gathering has a mission of strengthening collaborative efforts between PEG (public, educational, or governmental organizations), community media centers, LPFM, public radio, independent filmmakers, and other media creators while providing professional development through informational workshops and panels.

This year’s programming centered around professional development for the next generation of community media leaders, emergent production techniques, better practices for reaching out to marginalized communities, and ideas to improve working relationships with youth. Event participants were challenged to think about building new structures for connecting local communities and improving the current repertoire of media literacy training and tools while testing out the latest technologies in VR and animation software.

The event concluded with the ACMNWR’s 2018 Best of the Northwest Awards ceremony. The MHCRC would like to congratulate all of the winners and especially, Outside the Frame, a 2017 MHCRC Community Technology Grant Program grantee for their win for “Rest for Unrest” in the category of Community Involvement/Empowerment/ Making a Difference.
